Bangladesh Crisis: In Bangladesh, on Tuesday night (October 22, 2024), hundreds of protesters tried to storm Bangabhaban (President’s residence) in the capital Dhaka, after which tension increased again. There was a clash between the protesters and the police during the siege of Bangabhavan and the protesters have raised the demand of President Mohammad Shahabuddin to remove the old constitution.
In fact, after the political crisis in Bangladesh in August, Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee to India after ending her 16-year rule, while after that protests started again demanding the removal of President Mohammad Shahabuddin. This is because President Shahabuddin had said in a recent statement that he does not have documentary evidence of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
“There is no evidence of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation”
Last week, President Shahabuddin had said in a recent statement that he had no evidence of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5 and he had only heard about it. He said, “I tried several times to get his resignation but failed. Perhaps he did not have time.”
However, while addressing the public on the night of August 5, Shahabuddin had said, “You know that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has submitted her resignation to the President and I have received it.” Now legal advisor Asif Nazrul said that the President ‘lied’ and his comments were “a violation of his oath of office”. He said that there is a constitutional provision to remove him from the post.
Five people injured in the demonstration
According to Bangladeshi media, the protesters marched towards Bangabhaban on Tuesday evening. As more people joined the protest, the police also used force to stop them. The police also used batons to disperse the miscreants, but the protesters continued to move forward. At least five people, including two journalists, were injured during the demonstration.
According to ‘Daily Report’, late on Tuesday night, two of the most prominent student leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam), who led the protest for the removal of Sheikh Hasina, reached the protest site and stopped the protesters. Requested to leave from there.
Student leaders put forward five-point demand
Meanwhile, Hasnat assured to talk to political parties to elect a new President by Thursday. Sarjis said that if no one is appointed by the deadline, they will also take to the streets with you. Both the student leaders also put forward five-point demands including abolition of the 1972 Constitution of Bangladesh.
