According to a report published in ‘The Lancet Oncology’, the number of boys in India is more than girls suffering from cancer and the biggest reason for this is the Indian social thinking about the boy. According to the research, between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2019, personal data of children aged 0-19 years has been extracted according to data extracted from three central cancer hospitals in India. In which it has been found that boys are more cancer patients than girls.
There are data of three big hospitals of Delhi
Cancer registries data have also been used in this article. Including PBCR in Delhi between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2014 and Madras Metropolitan Tumor Registry between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2017. According to the research of ‘All India Institute of Medical Sciences’, New Delhi and Cancer Institute (WIA), Chennai, the male-female sex ratio has been calculated from three hospitals in terms of the ratio in the respective PBCR.
Boys are getting treated for cancer than girls
It has been mentioned in the report that compared to every girl who is treated for cancer, so many boys suffering from cancer are being treated. The team analyzed the male and female ratios of patients undergoing stem cell transplant separately. Stem cells transplant is an expensive treatment.

News Reels
According to Professor Sameer Bakshi of AIIMS Medical Oncology Department, New Delhi, we have seen that among the 11,000 patients registered in PBCR, boys are more likely to undergo cancer treatment. Similarly, in 22,000 children suffering from cancer in three hospitals, it was seen that more boys than girls were getting treated.
This is the difference between cancer patients in North and South India
However, as many boys come for cancer treatment, as many girls do not come. According to the researcher, fewer girls are getting treated in hospitals in North India as compared to South India. The disparity between genders is greater for patients coming from rural areas than those from urban areas. He said that this could be due to change in social fabric in different parts of the country. Our Indian society is such that boys are given more importance than girls. This can also be the reason for this.
Due to these reasons girls are not able to reach for cancer treatment.
It was also found in the research that if the distance from home to hospital is more than 100 kms. Even then, less number of girls were coming to the hospital, this data also suggests that due to high cost of cancer treatment, people may bring more boys than girls for treatment.
There have been improvements in cancer patients
According to the researcher, the male to female ratio in Delhi has improved in the last 15 years. According to Professor Bakshi, this data clearly shows that more boys are being treated for cancer than girls and the biggest reason for this could be the mindset of our Indian society regarding the boy. And this may also be due to a patriarchal society. Even today there are very few girls in our country who are being given treatment in private hospitals.
