Cricketers Banned for Drugs: The game of cricket is centuries old, but the rules have changed to a great extent compared to earlier. There have been many cases of drug consumption in football, athletics and Olympic games. In such a situation, the question arises whether there is a ban on the consumption of drugs in cricket too, if yes, then what punishment is given to the cricketers for consuming any kind of intoxicant?
Is there a ban on taking drugs?
In fact, in the world of sports, in most of the sports, athletes have to undergo dope test, which shows that if an athlete is consuming drugs, then what is the amount of drugs in his body? Cricket sport is also not untouched by doping and to maintain the spirit of the game, all the players have to undergo doping test. There is a ban on drugs and any kind of intoxicant in cricket, despite this many times players have been caught consuming other types of intoxicants including alcohol and cocaine.
What is the punishment for drug abuse?
WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) decides how much punishment to give to an athlete for taking drugs. For example, Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been caught consuming steroids. Akhtar was dropped from the 2006 Champions Trophy squad for consuming a drug called Nandrolone. At that time Akhtar was banned for 2 years. In the year 2019, Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw was also banned for doping violations. He was found to be using a drug called terbutaline, which is commonly found in cough syrups. In that case, Prithvi Shaw was banned for 8 months. Apart from them, legends like Ian Botham, Yusuf Pathan and Shane Warne have also been caught consuming drugs.
