Lahore: The brother of a Pakistani social media star, who was killed in Pakistan’s most infamous ‘honour killing’, was acquitted on Monday after serving a prison sentence of less than six years. Lawyers gave this information. 26-year-old Qandeel Baloch was murdered in 2016.
After Qandeel’s death, his brother Muhammad Wasim was arrested. Wasim was sentenced to life imprisonment for strangling Qandeel. Wasim admitted to the press that he had no remorse for the murder, as Qandeel’s behavior was “unbearable”. Wasim’s lawyer Sardar Mehboob told that a court in the eastern city of Multan has completely acquitted him. The court order has not been made public yet.
The case became one of the most high-profile “honour killings” of recent years – in which women are executed by male relatives in the name of allegedly tarnishing a family’s reputation. Three months after Baloch’s killing, Pakistan’s parliament passed a new law making life imprisonment mandatory for honor killings.
What is the legal screw?
Under recent changes in Pakistani law, criminals are no longer able to apologize to the victim’s family (sometimes to their own family) and commute their sentence. However, whether or not to define murder as a crime of honor is left to the discretion of the judge, meaning that the murderer could theoretically claim a different motive and then They can also be forgiven.
In Baloch’s case, his parents initially insisted that no exemption be given to their son but later changed their mind and said they wanted him to be pardoned. According to their lawyer Safdar Shah, a lawyer for the siblings’ mother said that she had given “his consent” to pardon Waseem. Wasim may be released later this week.
‘Who killed Qandeel’
Biographer Sanam Maher said, “Wasim is now free, while Qandeel was condemned for stepping outside the bounds of ‘acceptable’ treatment for women in Pakistan.” He said, “After today’s verdict, we can ask who killed him?”
