Bangladesh Hindu Violence: British MPs on Tuesday (3 December) expressed serious concern over the attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh and the arrest of religious leaders. Conservative Party MP Bob Blackman called this violence an attempt at ethnic cleansing against the Hindu community. He said that after Sheikh Hasina was out of power, atrocities against the Hindu community have increased in Bangladesh.
During a debate in the House of Commons, Blackman said, “Right now the Hindu community in Bangladesh is struggling with their houses burning, businesses looted and religious leaders arrested. Recently two priests were arrested and 63 saints “Barred from entering Bangladesh.”
Describing this issue as serious, he also said that this could be a conspiracy of ethnic cleansing against the Hindu community.
Appeal for strict action from the British government
Blackman urged British Foreign Minister Katherine West to strongly condemn the deliberate persecution of religious minorities in Bangladesh. West talked about including this issue among her priorities in Bangladesh and said that she will discuss this matter with India. Along with this, Indian-origin British MP Preeti Patel also expressed concern over the increasing attacks against the Hindu community in Bangladesh and demanded strict action from the British government.
What did Labor Party MP Barry Gardiner say?
Labor Party MP Barry Gardiner described the situation in Bangladesh as serious. He described this violence as a big threat to the Hindu and Bangladeshi communities of Britain. Gardiner also said that according to reports the police and army took no action during the attacks on more than 20 Hindu and Sufi places of worship in Bangladesh.
Tension increased after the arrest of Hindu leader
The recent arrest of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh has further increased the tension. Gardiner expressed concern over the arrest of Chinmoy Das and his denial of bail. British Sikh MP Gurinder Singh Joson also described this development as “shocking” and demanded a strong response from the British government in this matter.
Growing protests in India
On December 2, a large number of people demonstrated in the Indian city of Agartala in protest against the attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The protesters tried to enter the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh and vandalized it. The Indian Foreign Ministry had described this incident as tragic.
