The office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued an apology after criticism over the food menu of the Diwali reception held at 10 Downing Street last month. The event was meant to celebrate Diwali with the British Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities, but sparked controversy due to meat and alcohol being served. The event included traditional Diwali traditions like puja, lighting of lamps, Prime Minister’s address and Indian dance performances. But when some guests objected to the presence of non-vegetarian food and alcohol, they were told that these things were specifically requested. This decision created discontent among communities whose religious beliefs abstain from meat and alcohol.
This development was completely different from last year’s Diwali reception, when the then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had banned both meat and alcohol. This year’s menu caused outrage, especially among the Indian community, which follows traditional Diwali rituals.
PM’s spokesperson apologized
A spokesperson from the British PM’s office has expressed regret over this issue. The spokesperson said, "The Prime Minister welcomed many communities to celebrate Diwali. But a mistake happened in the planning. We understand the seriousness of this issue and apologize to the community. We assure that such an incident will not happen in future."
This apology has been issued after questions were raised regarding cultural sensitivity among the British Indian community.
