Brazil Ban Telegram App: A Brazilian court on Wednesday (April 26) temporarily banned the messaging app Telegram across the country. Telegram’s parent company is accused of not sharing information related to extremist and neo-Nazi groups operating in the country.
Neo-Nazi activities in Brazil are under the watch of the government. The court has imposed a fine of $ 198,000 (1 crore 61 lakhs) on Telegram every day for not sharing information related to neo-Nazi activities on behalf of Telegram. Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dino gave this information to journalists.
Rise in violence against children
Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dino told reporters that groups called Anti-Semitic Front and Anti-Semitic Movement are working on Telegram. These groups work to increase violence among children. They also play an important role in increasing violence against children.
The latest example of this was seen earlier this month, when a man wielding an ax injured four children between the ages of four and seven at their school. Last month, a 13-year-old boy killed a teacher at a Sao Paulo school in a knife attack.
Telegram does not want to help in the investigation
In view of the increasing violence between and against children in Brazil, the court has temporarily closed Telegram. Last November, a 16-year-old shooter killed four people and wounded more than 10 in twin attacks on two schools in Aracruz, in the southeastern state of Espirito Santo.
The G1 news portal quoted police sources as saying that the teen had allegedly communicated with anti-Semitic groups on Telegram. Investigators asked Telegram to hand over personal data of members of two alleged anti-Semitic groups, according to a document from the Federal Justice Authority in Espirito Santo.
The document states that the company has given data about the administrator of only one group, stating that Telegram’s intention is that it does not want to cooperate with the investigation.
