Petropolis (Brazil): The death toll in floods and landslides in the Brazilian mountain city of Petropolis rose to 117 on Thursday with 116 people still missing. The Rio de Janeiro state government confirmed the death toll had risen. Many people are feared to be buried in the soil.
Cars and houses were washed away on Thursday by floods and mudslides during the heaviest rains in decades. In a video, two buses were seen drowning in a surging river. There is a possibility of more landslides in the city.
Authorities said that people living in risky areas should move out. Local resident Rosalyn Virginia said her brother had barely survived and she believed it was a miracle, but had yet to find a friend.
Rio police said in a statement on Thursday that some 200 agents were visiting checkpoints, refugee camps and the city’s morgue to list the living, dead and missing. He removed three people from the missing people list after seeing them alive at a local school.
