The Government of Karnataka has informed the Supreme Court that the board examinations of classes 5, 8 and 9 have been canceled in three rural districts in the state for the academic year 2024-25. This decision came when the bench of Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma was hearing an appeal. In this, ‘Organization for Unaided Recognized Schools’ had challenged the March 22 decision of the Karnataka High Court.
The division bench of the Karnataka High Court had earlier allowed the state government to conduct board examinations for classes 5, 8, 9 and 11 for the 2023-24 academic year, while a single judge had overturned the decision on March 6. But the Supreme Court had stayed the order of the Division Bench on April 8. The bench said this is an example where the Karnataka state government has created a huge crisis not only among the students and their parents, but also among the teachers and school management.
Situation in other states
Karnataka is not the only state where board exams are held for students before class 10. Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) conducts board examinations for classes 5, 8, 10 and 12 in Rajasthan. Similarly, Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) had conducted examinations for classes 5 and 8, but now it has decided to abolish the class 5 board examinations.
Board exams below class 10th in these states too
Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) conducts board examinations for classes 5, 8, 10 and 12. In Tamil Nadu too, board exams for classes 5 and 8 were planned in 2019. But after protests it was not implemented.
Similarly, Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) also conducted board examinations for classes 5 and 8. This year, Class 5 exams were held from March 7 to 14, and Class 8 exams were held from March 7 to 27. Class 5 results were declared on April 2, while Class 8 results were declared on April 30. But the special thing is that PSEB has decided to abolish the class 5 board examinations.
