BJP government engaged in damage control in Odisha? Why were 55 IPS officers changed in 21 districts?


Odisha: Odisha government is in action mode after the high-profile sexual harassment case. In this sequence, the Odisha government on Sunday (September 29) made a large-scale reshuffle in the state police department and issued transfer orders of more than 55 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, including Superintendents of Police (SP) of 21 districts.

In a notification, the Odisha government informed about this reshuffle. According to the notification, senior IPS officer of 1988 batch A.K. Rai was appointed DG (Prison and Correctional Services), while Vinaytosh Mishra of 1993 batch was made Additional Director General of Police (Crime Branch).

Who was made DCP?

Accordingly, RP Koche was made the new Director of Intelligence, Arun Bothra was appointed as ADG (Railways and Coastal Security) and Soumyendra Kumar Priyadarshi was appointed as the new ADG (Modernisation). In another notification, the government said that it has appointed Pinak Mishra as the new DCP of Bhubaneswar.

What is the matter?

This case, which has attracted everyone’s attention across the country, is related to the allegations of alleged sexual harassment of a woman in Bharatpur police station of Bhubaneswar. The woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted is the fiancee of an army officer. When the army came to know about its personnel being involved in the case, it immediately intervened and asked for action. After this the matter was handed over to SDJM. The matter is being investigated and the Army is keeping a constant vigil to ensure a transparent investigation.

Odisha Women Commission also in action mode

Odisha Women’s Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of this matter and started investigating sexual harassment. In this regard, SCW President Minati Behera herself visited Bharatpur Police Station on Friday (September 27) to gather information about the incident.
