Cyclones In India List: Cyclone Biperjoy has changed from very severe to less severe, but preparations are in full swing by the Center and the Gujarat government to deal with its challenges. It is likely to reach between Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi coast of Pakistan on June 15.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi The Chief Minister on Monday (June 12) chaired a high-level meeting on the cyclone and directed the officials to ensure safe evacuation of people from vulnerable areas and maintenance of essential services.
Home Minister Amit Shah’s review meeting
On Tuesday (June 13), Union Home Minister Amit Shah also held a review meeting of preparedness to deal with the threat of Cyclone Biparjoy. It has been said by the government that its focus is on zero casualty and minimizing possible losses.
According to officials, so far about 30 thousand people have been taken to safer places from Kutch and Saurashtra. India Meteorological Department has said that Cyclone Biparjoy has the potential to cause extensive damage to crops, roads and power lines etc. Biparjoy has reminded some of India’s deadliest cyclones.

In May 2021, the extremely severe cyclonic storm Taukte caused havoc in some parts of Gujarat. More than 170 people had lost their lives due to this cyclonic storm. A tug boat ‘Barge P-305’ sank off the Mumbai coast due to the cyclone, in which more than 80 people died.
Cyclone Fani
The extremely severe cyclone Fani hit the coast of Odisha in 2019, due to which more than 100 people lost their lives. The cyclone came with winds running at a maximum speed of 240 kilometers per hour. About one million people were moved to around 5,000 temporary shelters hours before the storm hit the Odisha coast.
1999 Odisha cyclone
One of the deadliest cyclones that hit Odisha in 1999 claimed over 9,800 lives. More than 2 thousand people were injured. The cyclone hit the Paradip coast with a maximum wind speed of 260 kilometers per hour.
1998 Gujarat cyclone
In 1998, a very severe cyclone hit the Porbandar coast of Gujarat with maximum wind speed of 160 kmph. Due to this cyclonic storm, 1,176 people lost their lives and more than 1,700 people were injured.
1996 cyclonic storm
In 1996, a very severe cyclonic storm hit the coast near Kakinanda in Andhra Pradesh. About 2 thousand people had died due to the cyclone and 900 people were said to be missing. Due to the cyclone, crops were damaged on more than 3 lakh hectares of land.
1977 super cyclone
One of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s history, the ‘Super Cyclone’ killed nearly 10,000 people after it hit Nizampatnam in Andhra Pradesh in 1977. Property worth about Rs 350 crore was damaged due to the super cyclone.
1971 Odisha cyclone
In 1971, a severe cyclone hit the Paradip coast of Odisha, due to which an estimated 10,000 people lost their lives.
1977 Andhra Pradesh cyclone
At the same time, 14,204 people lost their lives in the cyclone that hit Andhra Pradesh in 1977.
