Karnataka Crime: The mother of Fayaz, accused in the murder of Congress councilor’s daughter in Hubli, Karnataka, has apologized to the girl’s family for her son’s actions. Along with this, he has demanded strict punishment for his son. After the incident came to light, the main opposition party is attacking the BJP government. BJP is suspecting it to be bad law and order and ‘love jihad’.

Neha, 23, daughter of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Congress councilor Niranjan Hiremath, was allegedly stabbed to death in the BVB College campus on Thursday. She was a first year MCA student. Meanwhile, Fayaz is his former classmate. Demonstrations have been held in many parts of the state demanding death penalty for Fayaz Khondunaik. Police have arrested accused Fayaz in connection with the incident of April 18. Fayaz’s mother Mumtaz, who is a teacher by profession, said, “I apologize to the people of Karnataka and Neha’s family for whatever my son did.” This is a big injustice done to Neha and her family.

‘Head bowed in shame’

“Whatever my son did is completely wrong and we bow our heads in shame,” he told the media in Dharwad. Whatever he did is a big mistake and he should be given strict punishment as per the law of the country. He said that his son and Neha were not just friends but they loved each other and wanted to get married. Mumtaz said, “My son is very bright and has scored more than 90 percent marks in LKG and UKG classes alone. He wants to become an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.

Demand for fair investigation

Meanwhile, former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar met the family of the deceased on Saturday and expressed grief over the incident. He said, ‘This is an inhuman act. The way Fayaz killed Neha is inhuman. I request that the state government, the Chief Minister and the Home Minister should conduct an impartial and prompt investigation into the matter.” A round of political allegations and counter-allegations has started between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in the state regarding this incident.

‘Multiple stabs with a knife’

Congress is calling it an incident with personal aspect, while BJP has expressed suspicion of it being ‘Love Jihad’ and said that it indicates worsening of law and order in the state. According to a senior police officer, Fayaz had stabbed Neha several times with a knife. During investigation, the accused claimed that there was a love affair between them but Neha later started distancing herself from him. The family of the deceased is demanding death sentence for the accused.
