Pakistan Hindu temple: A budget of one crore Pakistani rupees has been allocated for the reconstruction of a Hindu temple in Pakistan’s Punjab province, which will begin the first phase of its restoration after 64 years of dilapidation. According to media reports, information related to the case was given on Monday (21 October). According to Dawn News, the federal body that oversees places of worship for minorities in Pakistan, the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), has demolished Baoli Sahib in Zafarwal Nagar of Narowal city, located on the western bank of the Ravi River in Punjab. Construction of the temple has started.
Baoli Sahib temple had fallen into disrepair in 1960. At present there is no Hindu temple in Narowal district, due to which the Hindu community has to perform religious rituals at home or go to the temples of Sialkot and Lahore for the same. Ratan Lal Arya, former chairman of the Pak Dharmasthan Committee, said that due to ETPB’s control over the Baoli Sahib temple, it fell into disrepair and more than 1,453 Hindus in Narowal were deprived of their place of worship.
Temples became dilapidated due to lack of repair
After the formation of Pakistan, there were 45 temples in Narowal district, but due to none of them being repaired on time, they started falling into disrepair. Arya said that the Pak Dharamsthal Committee has been advocating for the renovation of Baoli Sahib temple for the last 20 years. He said that the government has taken steps to repair the temple to meet the demands of the Hindu community. Supreme Court’s ‘One Man Commission’ Chairman Shoaib Siddal and National Human Rights Commission member Manzoor Masih have played important roles in this repair effort.
More than 75 lakh Hindus in Pakistan
Pak Dharmasthan Committee Chairman Sawan Chand said that the renovation of Baoli Sahib temple will fulfill a long-standing demand of the Hindu community, which will allow them to perform religious rituals at the place of worship. Hindus are the largest minority community in Pakistan. According to official estimates, more than 75 lakh Hindus live in Pakistan. However, according to the community, there are more than 90 lakh Hindus in the country.
