Films Based On Prostitutes: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming series ‘Hiramandi’ is ready to stream on Netflix on May 1, 2024. The audience has been waiting for this series for a long time. This web series of 8 episodes is based on the lives of courtesans of the red light area of Lahore, Pakistan.
Even before ‘Hiramandi’, many such films have been made in Bollywood which show the difficult life of courtesans and have the skill to shock the audience. This list includes Alia Bhatt’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ to Meena Kumari’s ‘Pakeezah’.
‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’
Before ‘Hiramandi’, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is also based on courtesans. This Alia Bhatt starrer film is based on a chapter of Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia ‘Queens of Mumbai’. The film is the story of courtesans of Kamathipura area whose responsibility is in the hands of courtesan ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’. How these prostitutes are kept away from education and security has been shown in the film.
‘Pakija’
Actress Meena Kumari played the role of a courtesan Saheb Jaan in the film ‘Pakeezah’ released in 1972. ‘Pakija’ had presented excellent art through her dance on songs like ‘Inhi Log Ne’ to ‘Chalte Chalte Yun Hi Koi’. ‘Pakeezah’ was made by the makers in 15 years and this film was successful at the box office.
‘Umrao Jaan’
‘Umrao Jaan’ was released in 1981. This film was based on the 1899 Urdu novel ‘Umrao Jaan’ Ada by Mirza Mohammad Hadi Ruswa. Rekha played the lead role in this film telling the story of love and loss. During that period, Muzaffar Ali had called 25 courtesans and learned their ways. Rekha also performed many Kathak dances in this film, including ‘In Aankhon Ki Masti Mein’ and ‘Dil Kya Cheez Hai’.
‘Market’
Shyam Benegal’s film ‘Mandi’ (1983) also shows the physical relationship between prostitutes and rich people and the subsequent birth of children. It is shown in the film how the only means of survival of the courtesans are the royal families and rich men. This film was nominated for three Filmfare Awards in Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Apart from this, the film was awarded the National Award for Best Art Direction.
‘Devdas’
Madhuri Dixit was seen in the role of a courtesan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Devdas’. In this film based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, Madhuri has played the role of Chandramukhi, who heals the wounds of ‘Devdas’ after his heart gets broken. But he does not get the love of ‘Devdas’ in return.
