Be alert! Heavy rain warning in Tamil Nadu, schools had to be closed, NDRF team deployed

Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Rain has disrupted normal life in South India. The Meteorological Department issued a warning of heavy rain during the next 24 hours in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. According to the report of news agency ANI, in view of the warning of bad weather, schools have been closed in Chennai and 10 other districts of Tamil Nadu today i.e. on 12 December 2024.

Announcement of school closure in these districts

The 11 districts of the state where school closure has been announced on Thursday include Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet, Tiruvallur and Chennai. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukkottai districts. There is also a possibility of rain and lightning at different places here.

IMD issued alert regarding heavy rain

Orange alert has been issued for the next two days due to heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe. Yellow alert has been issued for rain in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema and South Interior Karnataka. NDRF and state emergency teams have been deployed to mitigate the impact of rain. Fishermen have been advised not to go into the sea till December 13. Heavy rains have been recorded in Tamil Nadu this year.

Advice for common citizens to stay indoors

In November, schools and colleges were closed due to similar weather conditions in Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts. Common citizens have been advised to stay indoors and follow the instructions of local authorities to ensure their safety. The deep low pressure area formed in the south-western part of the Bay of Bengal has moved towards west-northwest and has come close to the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. This is the reason why rain alert has been issued in Tamil Nadu.
