Cyber Fraud in Bastar: In Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district, a case of cheating 75 thousand from a shop operator by pretending to be an army officer has come to the fore. The accused cleverly trapped the shop operator in the name of an army officer and siphoned off Rs 75,000 from his account through online transactions. After cheating, the fake army officer switched off his mobile.
After the complaint was registered in Kotwali, the cyber cell team managed to reach the accused. After checking the bank account, finally the fake army officer was arrested from Haryana. The accused has confessed to the crime of duping many people by posing as an army officer. The accused crossed lakhs of rupees by doing online transactions from the victim’s account. The police have sent the accused to jail after presenting them in the court.
Cheated a shopkeeper by pretending to be an army officer
Bastar ASP Nivedita Paul said that Harsh Bafna, a resident of Jagdalpur, had lodged a complaint at Kotwali police station. The shopkeeper had told that by pretending to be an army officer, the person cheated 25-25 thousand rupees three times by sending a Google payment request in the name of buying furniture. The applicant Harsh Bafna did not even know about the withdrawal of 75 thousand from the bank account. On knowing the OTP, the accused switched off his mobile by doing 75 thousand online transactions. Despite trying for several days, the call did not work.

After being a victim of fraud, Harsh Bafna got the case registered in Kotwali police station. The applicant told that the accused called himself an army officer and said that the family lives in the government quarter of Parpa, adjacent to Jagdalpur. After registering the case, the police got involved in locating the accused. The cyber cell team arrested the accused from Mewat in Haryana on the basis of bank account and other evidence.
Police interrogation told how he used to cheat
In the interrogation of the police, the accused confessed to the crime and made a shocking disclosure. He has told that people of other cities and states have also been cheated. Through Google Map, the accused used to extract the number of the shopkeeper. In the name of buying furniture or other electronic goods, he used to pretend to transfer money through Google Pay. Asks OTP from shopkeepers by sending payment request.
On knowing the OTP, he would have stolen the money from the account of the shop operators. After registering a case under Cyber Act and Section 420, the accused was presented in the court. The accused has been sent to jail on the orders of the court. Bastar SP Jitendra Singh Meena has appealed to be aware to avoid cases of online fraud.
