Bashar’s father became president after the coup
It is noteworthy that Bashar al-Assad’s family has been playing an important role in Syrian politics since 1960. Bashar’s father Hafez al-Assad took over as President of Syria in a coup in 1971.

According to Britannica, Bashar al-Assad was born on September 11, 1965 in Damascus, the capital of Syria. He received his early education in Damascus itself. After studying medicine at Damascus University, Asad graduated as an ophthalmologist in 1988. After graduation, he became a military doctor in a military hospital in Damascus. In 1992, he moved to London. On the other hand, Hafiz al-Assad declared his elder son Basil as his political successor. However, the power of Syria still remained in the hands of Hafiz. In 1994, Basil died in a car accident. After the death of his elder brother, Bashar was made the successor.
Bashar received military training before handing over power
Despite his lack of political and military experience, Bashar was called to Syria and he was persuaded to take power. After this he was given military training in a military academy. After training he was given the rank of colonel. Bashar al-Assad had no interest in politics at all. Therefore, Bashar’s father Hafez al-Assad presented Bashar’s image through planning.
Rules changed for Bashar’s coronation
Bashar’s father Hafez al-Assad died on 10 June 2000. Bashar was about to become president after his father’s death. But at the time of Hafiz, the minimum age to become President was 40 years, which was reduced to 34 years for Bashar. After this, on July 10, 2000, Bashar was elected President unopposed.
