Bangladesh High Court ULFA Smugglers: The interim government that came after Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh is continuously trying to hurt India. This time the government of Mohammad Yunus has come forward as a shield to the enemy of India. In fact, a High Court of Bangladesh on Wednesday (18 December 2024) commuted the death sentence of ULFA leader Paresh Barua to life imprisonment and a former junior minister in a 2004 case of attempting to smuggle weapons to the separatist organization in Northeast India. And five others were acquitted.
A total of 10 truckloads of weapons were seized in April 2004, despite alleged efforts by some “influential parties” to safely transport weapons to United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) bases in north-eastern India via Chittagong. The seized weapons included more than 27,000 grenades, 150 rocket launchers, more than 11 lakh rounds of ammunition, 1,100 sub-machine guns and 1.14 crore cartridges.
Bangladesh acquitted ULFA leader
A government lawyer said that a two-member bench of the High Court reduced the death sentence awarded to ULFA leader Paresh Barua in his absence to life imprisonment. It is believed that he is currently in China. He said the High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akhtar acquitted former Minister of State for Home Lutfuzzaman Babar and six others who were awarded death sentence.
These people got death sentence
The five others who escaped death sentence include former Director General, Military Intelligence (DGFI) retired Major General Razakul Haider Chaudhary, former Managing Director of Government Fertilizer Plant (CUFL) Mohsin Talukdar, its General Manager Enamul Haq, former Additional Secretary in the Industries Ministry Secretary Noorul Amin and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rehman Nizami. The plant site is believed to be used to transport weapons for ULFA.
