Elephant Rescue: Business tycoon Mukesh Ambani’s son Anant Ambani’s love for animals is not hidden from anyone. Now he has given new life to three elephants. Three African wild elephants are being brought to Vantara located in Jamnagar, Gujarat. These include two female and one male elephants, whose age is 28 to 29 years.
In fact, a private zoo in Tunisia is struggling to meet the food, shelter and veterinary needs of the elephants. In such a situation, the officials of this zoo contacted Anant Ambani’s Vantara and Anant Ambani decided to rescue him without wasting time. The elephants will be transported to India through a chartered cargo plane.
The process of bringing elephants to India is completed
More than two decades ago, at just four years old, Achtam, Kani and Mina (the names of the elephants) were transferred from Burkina Faso to Zoo Friguia Park in Tunisia, where they have been a treat for visitors for nearly 23 years. The attractions remain.
All regulatory and legal compliance with national and international legislation, including the requirements of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has been met.
After living in zoo for 23 years, it is not possible to go back to the jungle.
Despite being a major attraction at Friguia Park, financial constraints began to affect the zoo, leading to the decision to retire three African wild elephants and recoup the costs. The zoo recognized that after many years in captivity and heavy reliance on human care, return to the wild was neither feasible nor desirable.
As a result, they looked for a facility that could give the elephants the best chance for a peaceful and satisfying retirement – a facility that would meet all of their special health needs and allow them to get the good care they deserve.
Elephants facing health challenges
A recent health assessment conducted by veterinary experts at Vantara has revealed that the elephants are facing various health challenges. Skin diseases can lead to hair loss and matted skin, requiring constant medical attention. Achtam has cracked teeth and a molar tooth infection, which required careful medical attention and surgery, while Kani has cracked nails, possibly caused by prolonged exposure to hard floors.
Currently, elephants live in poorly ventilated concrete houses and an enclosure that lacks the nutrients needed for their mental and physical health. Their diet is mainly dry grass and they have limited access to clean water.
While African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) are native to the dense tropical forests of Central and West Africa, no wild populations of this species exist in Tunisia. In their natural habitats, these elephants thrive in vast forest landscapes, feeding on diverse leaves and enjoying the freedom to access patches of soil that are beneficial for the health of their skin.
Why was Vantara chosen?
Vantara has recreated these comforts through spacious, rich enclosures with native vegetation, earthen ponds and thoughtfully designed food enrichments that encourage natural foraging behavior.
Their new home in Vantara will provide Achtam, Kani and Mina with an environment that closely resembles their wild habitat, as well as specialized care to support their physical, psychological and social well-being – with compassion for them A new opportunity to live a full life.
