PM Modi Abhidhamma Divas Speech: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the government is going to launch several initiatives for the preservation and development of the Pali language and the sacred texts written in it, the teachings of Buddha. Addressing the International Abhidhamma Day programme, PM Modi said, “Pali was the language in which the teachings of Lord Buddha were expressed on Abhidhamma Day and now this language has been given the status of classical language.”
‘It is our responsibility to keep Buddha’s message alive’
PM Modi said, “Pali is most important to understand Dhamma. A language is not just a way of communication, but the soul of a civilization, its culture, its heritage. It is important to keep Pali alive and spread the message of Buddha through it.” It is our responsibility to keep it alive.”
He also said, “Centuries of colonial rule and invaders before independence tried to erase India’s identity and people with slave mentality did the same after our independence. Then the eco system had distanced India from its heritage. And India was left far behind. The Indian government is making all efforts to revive India’s Buddhist heritage. In the last few years, we have brought back more than 600 artefacts, most of which were Buddhist objects.”
Youth should be proud of their culture
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Said, “We are trying to promote Pali through apps, digitalization. Understanding Pali requires both academic and spiritual efforts. Scholars and academicians should guide people in understanding Buddhism. India is reinventing its identity in the revival of Buddha’s legacy.” He also had a word for the youth of the country saying that the youth in India should not only lead the world in science and technology but they should also develop their culture, values and values. And one should be proud of the roots also.
Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat described Abhidhamma Day as a very important day not only for the followers of Buddhism but also for the entire humanity. He said that this day symbolizes the call to live a life full of peace, prosperity and harmony. He said that knowledge of Pali language will enhance the ability to do comparative study of Buddhist teachings and texts.
The Central Government gave the status of classical language to Pali language on 3 October 2024. Along with this, Marathi, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali were also given the status of classical languages. International Abhidhamma Day is celebrated all over the world. It is celebrated to commemorate the descent of Lord Buddha from the celestial world after giving the teachings of Abhidhamma. It is also celebrated to preserve and promote the heritage of Buddhism.
