Bangladesh Myanmar Border Tension: The problems of the new government of Bangladesh are not showing signs of ending. Since last week, there has been a dramatic change in the security arrangements on Myanmar’s Bangladesh border, as the junta has lost control over this area, which may also have an impact on India. The Arakan Army, the largest of all the rebel groups in Myanmar, now controls large parts of Rakhine state (bordering Bangladesh), which is strategically important for India.

The junta (Myanmar Army) has lost control over the 270 km long border dividing Myanmar and Bangladesh. There are also reports that the Arakan Army now controls areas inside Bangladesh along the Myanmar-Bangladesh border and this could lead to a clash between the Bangladesh Army and the Arakan Army and further complicate the security situation in the area.

‘Muslims fleeing towards Bangladesh’

Apart from this, the Arakan Army has restricted movement across the Naf River. The Arakan Army has claimed that local Muslims affiliated with the police and Myanmar Army are trying to flee to Bangladesh.

What is Arakan Army?

In the year 2021, the army took over power in Myanmar. After this, many groups across the country have emerged as a force against the army. At present the situation in the country is like a civil war. There is an alliance of three groups against the military administration in Myanmar’s civil war. This alliance has captured different areas of the country. This alliance includes Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), Tang National Liberation Army (Eastern Myanmar) and Arakan Army (Western Myanmar).

The Arakan Army was formed in 2009 by members of the Rakhine community in Myanmar, led by former student activist Twann Murat Naing. He sought refuge with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in northern Myanmar. Initially the aim of this group was to have an autonomous government in Rakhine, which had taken up arms to demand some rights from the central government. But ever since the military junta of Myanmar overthrew the government, the Arakan Army has been maintaining an open front against it.
