US President Joe Biden’s administration on Tuesday approved the sale of advanced tanks, other combat vehicles and weapons worth nearly $4 billion to its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally Poland. According to the Foreign Ministry, it has given Poland permission to buy 116 M1A1 Abrams battle tanks and other equipment, including various ammunition worth about US$3.75 billion.
The ministry said it has also approved the sale of Chinook helicopters worth USD 1.5 billion to ally South Korea. According to the ministry, both the clearances have been given under US national security interests. This will not change the basic military balance in any region facing threats from Russia and North Korea.
The ministry said in a statement that Poland’s purchase of the Abrams tank “will support US foreign policy goals and national security objectives by improving the security of a NATO ally, which is conducive to political stability and economic progress in Europe.” ‘
