RSV Spread In US: These days in America, cases of Respiratory Syncytial Virus are increasing rapidly in children’s hospitals. Due to increasing cases of RSV, the number of patients in hospitals has increased. RSV is a common virus, which spreads mainly through direct contact or cough. It usually causes mild symptoms, but can prove dangerous for young children and the elderly.
According to a nurse working at a children’s hospital in Los Angeles, US, she has never seen such a high number of RSV cases. The nurse told Al Jazeera News that even before the surge in RSV cases, the hospital’s ICU was already under pressure due to staff shortages. Nurses can attend to a maximum of two patients in the ICU, a unit consisting of 24 beds. Sometimes they have to limit the number of beds filled to 20 because there are not enough staff.
Shortage of health workers increases tension
The nurse said that now due to the increase in RSV cases, it is a big challenge to have enough wiggle room for serious trauma patients coming from the emergency room. Earlier, the number of patients suffering from respiratory disease used to be 50 to 60 percent, but this year it is estimated to reach 70 percent. Mental stress and illness have forced a large number of health workers to leave their jobs due to increasing work pressure after the start of the Covid pandemic.
