Jammu and Kashmir: The Jammu and Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) on Thursday, May 11, discovered a rare type of fish called “crocodile gar” fish for the first time during the ongoing cleaning of Dal Lake. The ‘alligator gar’ fish, known for its crocodile-like head and razor-sharp teeth, is native to North America. Masood Ahmad, an expert with the research and monitoring department of the Jammu and Kashmir LCMA, said they are a part of the fisheries and scat-K. Going to analyze the discovered fishes with the help of fisheries department.
“We are going to take help from the fisheries department and SCAST-K to find out the effects of this type of fish on our existing fish species inside Dal Lake,” Ahmed said. During the normal de-weeding routine in Dal Lake, he found a rare variety of fish on the conveyor. He told that this was the first fish of its kind here. Dr. Farooq Ahmad Bhat, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology Kashmir (SKUAST-K), said that the fish seen in Dal Lake. Also told that it is an alligator gar fish, which has been seen for the first time in Kashmir. Dr. Farooq said that this fish is not harmful, but we do not have any research on it as it has been seen for the first time here in Dal Lake.
Dr. Farooq said that in 2016, grass carp fish was seen here in Dal Lake. Later our team saw another fish in Manasbal lake, but this crocodile fish has been seen for the first time in Kashmir. Dr. Farooq said that proper research will be done on how it reached here or whether it is dangerous for the local fish of Kashmir.
What fish is the alligator gar?
According to the information given on National Geographic, the Alligator Gar is the largest species of the Gar family. Such fish are found in submerged water in North America, but they can also tolerate brackish water. He told that their age is 18 to 20 years. The body is in the shape of a torpedo. Usually the color is brown or olive, have big teeth and are non-vegetarian. This fish can be up to 10 feet (about 3 meters) long. Their weight can be up to 350 pounds (about 159 kg). Also, the alligator guard remains lethargic during the day and hunts at night. Usually hunts living in water, such as turtles, but also attacks humans when threatened.
