Rahul Gandhi on Agniveer Yojana: Lok Sabha Elections During the campaign, former National President of Congress Rahul Gandhi on Monday (8 April) once again targeted the Agneepath recruitment scheme of the Modi government. Rahul Gandhi promised that if Congress Party comes to power, it will end ‘Agniveer Yojana’. In this recruitment scheme, firefighters are not given all the facilities that they should get like army soldiers.
During a rally in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Agniveer scheme puts Indian soldiers in greater trouble than their Chinese counterparts. He also claimed that the soldiers recruited under the Agniveer scheme are given training for only 6 months, whereas the Chinese soldiers are trained for 5 years and are traded.
‘Soldiers will not get anything in terms of status and benefits’

He alleged and argued that there are many shortcomings in this plan due to which the Indian soldiers, who are called ‘Agniveer’, will have to face many challenges during the war. He said that the ‘Agniveer Scheme’ weakens both the ‘status and benefits’ of the soldiers.
‘PMO had prepared the plan without the army’
Congress leader Gandhi says that under Agniveer Yojana, soldiers are not given pension, canteen facilities or martyr status like regular army soldiers. Reiterating the Congress Party’s commitment to end the Agniveer Yojana, he also said that it has been included in their (Congress’s) manifesto, ‘Nyaya Patra’. He alleged that this plan was prepared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) without the consent of the Army.
Agneepath Recruitment Scheme was launched in June 2022
Agneepath Recruitment Scheme was launched by the Central Government in June 2022. Its objective is to recruit personnel for short periods to reduce the age profile of the armed forces. Youth aged between 17½ to 21 years have been given the opportunity to join this scheme, who have been given the option of extension of service up to 15 years with terms of four years.
