Bangladesh Violence Latest News: The Bangladesh High Court will hear a petition seeking a ban on broadcasting of Indian TV channels in the country. Dhaka Tribune has confirmed this in its Arni report. This report states that the petition filed by lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan has cited growing concerns over the influence of Indian media on Bangladeshi culture and society.
Bhuiyan filed the petition on Monday and sought a ban on broadcasting of Indian TV channels under the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006. In this petition, it has been alleged that inflammatory news is being broadcast on Indian channels and uncontrolled telecast of material opposing Bangladeshi culture is ruining the youth. Bhuiyan’s petition also alleges that Indian channels operate in Bangladesh without following any local regulations.
Questions have also been raised regarding not making rules
According to Dhaka Tribune, the petition also raised the question as to why a rule directing banning of Indian TV channels in Bangladesh should not be issued. The High Court bench of Justice Fatima Najeeb and Justice Sikdar Mahmudur Razi can hear this petition. Bhuiyan has made the secretaries of the Ministry of Information and Home Ministry, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and others as respondents in this petition. The proposed ban includes Star Jalsa, Star Plus, Zee Bangla, Republic Bangla and all other Indian TV channels.
India-Bangladesh relations are continuously deteriorating
India-Bangladesh relations have declined since the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from the post on 5 August 2024. Since then, Bangladesh has seen an increase in violent attacks against Hindus and other minority groups, leading to calls for greater protection and support. Violence against minority communities is increasing in Bangladesh, temples are being destroyed, on October 25 in Chittagong, ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested on charges of treason and hoisting the saffron flag above the national flag of Bangladesh. Since then the tension has increased further. On 27 November, tensions escalated after the death of a lawyer during clashes between police and alleged followers of Das in the Chittagong Court Building area. India has several times expressed concern about the situation in Bangladesh and has urged the interim government of Bangladesh to take steps for the protection of minorities.
