Aavesham Among Top 7 Malayalam Films Of All Time; List Includes Aadujeevitham, Manjummel Boys &


New Delhi: ‘Aavesham’ is hitting the high rock at the box office with the coveted Rs. 100 cr club. The Fahadh Faasil-starrer has collected Rs. 100 cr in a matter of just 13 days at the box office. The Malayalam film has become Fahadh’s first hero-led film to enter the Rs. 100 cr club. As of now, ‘Aavesham’ ranks among the Top films in the 100 cr club of Mollywood movies. Let’s take a look at top 7 films in the Malayalam movie industry.

Aavesham

‘Aavesham’ stars Fahadh Faasil, Midhutty, Sajin Gopu, and Mansoor Ali Khan, whereas Hipzster, Mithun Jai Shankar, and Roshan Shanavas. The film revolves around the story of three teenagers in Bangalore who get caught up in conflicts with their seniors. They then take the help of a local goon, Ranga, played by Fahadh Faasil.

‘Aavesham’ released alongside ‘Varshangalkku Shesham’. Both films started off on a decent note but thanks to Fahadh’s performance and the film’s comedy-action genre that appealed to many fans and audiences, ‘Aavesham’ continues to do well thanks to glowing word-of-mouth reviews.

Aadujeevitham

‘Aadujeevitham’ starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead and inspired from the real life story of a Malayali migrant worker Najeeb who was forced into servitude in Saudi Arabia. Directed by National-Award winning director Blessy, Sukumaran’s performance, cinematography and the sheer dedication of the film’s team in bringing the 2008 novel of the same name to screen earned the film a great response at the box office.

‘Aadujeevitham’ collected Rs. Rs. 150 cr globally within 25 days of release.

Manjummel Boys

‘Manjummel Boys’ is a survival thriller film starring an ensemble cast. The film has been directed by Chidambaram and produced by Parava Films. The film revolves around the story of a group of friends from a small town called Manjummel near Kochi, who decide to vacation in Kodaikanal.

‘Manjummel Boys’ grossed a total of Rs. 200 cr worldwide. The film collected Rs. 1 cr in Tamil Nadu on the first weekend and earned Rs. 15 cr, thereby becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film in the state.

The film was also well received by the critics.

Premalu

‘Premalu’ is a Malayalam romantic comedy starring Naslen and Maitha Baiju. Directed by Girish AD and produced by the company of Fahadh Faasil and Friends and Working Class Hero, this rom com did extremely good business thanks to word of mouth reviews.

‘Premalu’ revolves around the story of Sachin Santhosh, a graduate from Kerala, planning to move to the United Kingdom, but instead goes to Hyderabad and meets and falls in love with Reenu Toy, an IT company employee.

‘Premalu’ grossed over Rs. 95 cr in India and Rs. 40 cr overseas, taking the total collection to Rs. 135 cr. The film was also reviewed well by critics and audiences alike.

Reportedly, a sequel of the film is also in the making.

2018

‘2018’ is a Malayalam language film based on the 2018 Kerala floods. Directed by JA Joseph, the film stars Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, Narain, Lal, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Kunchacko Boban in the lead.

The film was shot in different parts of Kerala and Hyderabad. ‘2018’ became a big commercial success at the box office, grossing around Rs. 176 cr at the box office to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time, until ‘Manjummel Boys’ surpassed it.

In 2023, it was also chosen by the Film Federation of India as India’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

Lucifer

‘Lucifer’ is a political action thriller directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film also marked Prithviraj’s directorial debut and starred Mohanlal in the lead. Starring an ensemble cast, the film broke several box office records for a Malayalam film.

‘Lucifer’ was also dubbed and released in Hindi and Telugu. The film collected Rs. 100 cr in just 8 days of release and Rs. 150 cr in 21 days becoming the fastest Malayalam film to reach such milestones.

Pulimurugan

Again a Mohanlal starrer, ‘Pulimurugan’ is an action thriller film directed by Vysakh. Made on a budget of Rs. 25 cr, the film became the first Malayalam film to earn more than Rs. 100 cr and break several box-office records of the time. It also became the highest grossing Malayalam film by surpassing another Mohanlal starrer ‘Drishyam’.

In total, ‘Pulimurugan’ collected around Rs. 130 cr.
