Draupadi Murmu Speech: Days after President Draupadi Murmu’s emotional speech on the plight of those languishing in jails for petty offenses despite being granted bail, the Supreme Court on Tuesday (29 November) asked jail authorities across the country to submit details of such prisoners within 15 days. Directed to make available the same to the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), so that a national plan could be prepared for their release.
President Draupadi Murmu, in her maiden Constitution Day address in the Supreme Court on November 26 (Saturday), highlighted the plight of poor tribals from Jharkhand as well as her home state Odisha, saying they were unable to pay bail due to lack of money to pay the bail amount. Despite meeting, he is in jail.
In a departure from his written speech in English, Murmu spoke in Hindi and urged the judiciary to do something for the poor tribals. He had said that those accused of serious crimes go free, but these poor prisoners, who may have been jailed for slapping someone, have to spend years in jail before they are released.
