Shyam Benegal studied at Nizam College of Osmania University in Hyderabad. He completed his post graduation in Economics from this college. It was from here that he started a film society. Shyam Benegal was suffering from serious kidney disease.
In 1959, he started working as a copy-writer at Lintas Advertising, a Mumbai-based advertising agency. Here he gradually continued his journey to the post of Creative Head. In the year 1962, he made his first documentary film “Gher Baitha Ganga” (Ganga at the Door) in Gujarati. His dream of making his first feature film remained unfulfilled for the next decade, as he was working on its script.

Between 1966 and 1973, Benegal taught at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune and served as the President of the institute twice, in 1980–83 and 1989–92. By this time he had started making documentary films.

Film director Shyam Benegal was awarded Padma Shri in 1976 and Padma Bhushan in 1991. On 8 August 2007, he was given Indian cinema’s highest honour, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (year 2005). Apart from this, he is a seven-time National Film Award winner for Best Feature Film in Hindi Cinema.
