Like there are DMs to manage the district. Similarly, it is the responsibility of the SDM to manage the Tehsil level. Sub Divisional Magistrates are an important link in the process of dividing the district into smaller administrative parts. SDM is an officer who heads a sub-division and handles administrative charges below the district level. The post of SDM is very important in the administrative structure. The post of SDM is held by junior officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or senior officers of the State Civil Service (PCS). In states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, SDMs are known as Sub Collectors, where these officers head the revenue division.

• Issuance and renewal of arms licenses.
• Issuance of certificates: Like OBC, SC/ST and Domicile.
• Marriage registration work.
• Work related to election process.

SDM has complete control over the Tehsildars of his sub-division. Also, he works as an important link between the District Officer and the Tehsildar of his sub-division. This post not only maintains the smooth functioning of the administrative system but also provides services by giving priority to the needs of the public.

In states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, SDM is known as Sub Collector. When IAS officers become in-charge of the Revenue Division, they function with the same designation and exercise magisterial powers.

How much salary do you get?

According to reports, SDM is provided salary in pay band 9300-34800 with grade pay 5400. SDM salary starts from Rs 56,100 and goes up to Rs 1.77 lakh. Apart from this, they are also given various allowances.

Powers under the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973

SDM gets the authority to perform magisterial functions under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973. These functions include maintaining law and order, resolving land disputes and conducting revenue collection. Maintaining coordination between the Tehsildar and the District Officer is a major function of the SDM.
