This information has come to light through the report of Times of India. At present, all vehicles used for transport can be used as contract carriage. The proposal to amend the Motor Vehicle Act of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will help in providing legal clarity regarding the use of motorcycles. According to the report, many states had banned the use of motorcycles for ride-hailing services, to which the ministry is coming with this amendment proposal. Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, the ministry is going to amend the cab aggregators guidelines to include motorcycles.
Youth aged 16-18 years will be allowed to ride motorcycles!
To deal with the problem of underage driving, the ministry has proposed to allow people in the age group of 16 to 18 years to operate 50 cc motorcycles with a maximum motor power of 1500 watts at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is going to introduce 67 proposed amendments in the Motor Vehicle Act in the winter session of Parliament in which it is proposed to reclassify Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) on the basis of their gross weight along with a new definition of buses of educational institutions. In these amendments, three-wheelers are also being defined after a Supreme Court case.
Strictness will increase on buses of educational institutions
According to the amendment being brought regarding the new definition of buses of educational institutions, there are more than six people, excluding the driver, which have been purchased or taken on lease or hired by the institution for the transportation of students and employees. According to the proposal, to increase the accountability of institutions and drivers, the ministry has proposed to double the penalty for violating traffic rules of such buses. Another proposed amendment will ask states to process applications for cab aggregators, automated test stations and recognized driver training centers within six months. If the states do not take action within this time limit, then the guidelines of the Central Government will be applicable.
