Jagannath Rath Yatra 2023: According to the Panchang, every year after Jyestha Purnima, Lord Jagannath falls ill and for this reason the doors of the temple are closed for 15 days for devotees to visit. During this, God is treated with special medicines by keeping him in seclusion.
You must have heard about the many temples of Lord Krishna in Mathura and Vrindavan. There are many beliefs and traditions associated with these places, which are prevalent even today. But the temple of Lord Jagannath located in Puri, Odisha is famous all over the world.
The Rath Yatra here is conducted with great pomp, in which lakhs of devotees gather. Its preparations also start several months in advance. The Rath Yatra begins on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month and ends with the return of Lord Jagannath on the 11th day of Shukla Paksha. This year, the festival of Rath Yatra will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 and Rath Yatra will be taken out in other states and regions of the country including Puri. But before the Rath Yatra Lord Jagannath has fallen ill and his treatment is going on.
Why Lord Jagannath falls ill
There are many popular stories behind Lord Jagannath being ill for 15 days every year. There is also a belief that, on the day of Jyeshtha Purnima, the Lord falls ill at night after the devotees take a bath. To make them healthy, decoction is given to them by the doctor. For 15 days they drink only decoction and fruit juice. Along with this, cool paste is also applied to God for the whole 15 days and sweet milk is offered before sleeping at night. During this, neither the bell rings in the temple nor the devotees can have darshan, nor food is offered to the God.
When will Jagannath give darshan to the devotees
Lord Jagannath’s treatment will continue for 15 days and Vaidya will treat him everyday. God will remain in seclusion for these 15 days. After this, Lord Jagannath will be cured on June 19 and after getting healthy, he will give darshan to the devotees. Then on June 20, Rath Yatra will be taken out with great pomp.
