Ukraine has apologized for a controversial tweet by its defense ministry that allegedly showed a picture of the Hindu goddess Kali on a balloon raised by the explosion. Nearly two days after this tweet posted by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, there was a massive social media outcry in India. However, the tweet was deleted within a few hours. The Ukrainian minister, who visited Delhi only last month and sought India’s support against the Russian war, said Ukraine and its people respect Indian culture.
Ukraine’s minister expressed regret over the picture
Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Emin Dzepar tweeted, “We regret that the Defense Department of Ukraine distorted the Hindu goddess Kali. Ukraine and its people respect the unique Indian culture and appreciate India’s support.” Highly appreciate. The photo has already been removed. Ukraine is determined to further enhance cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect and friendship.
Why did the controversy start?
Indeed, on April 30, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine posted a tweet with the caption “work of art” and shared a photo of an explosion created by Ukrainian artist Maxim Palenko. In this painting, the artist depicted a woman resembling the Hindu goddess ‘Maa Kali’ in the ‘flying skirt’ pose of the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe with an exploding balloon. However, the Defense Ministry of Ukraine later deleted the tweet following heavy criticism.
Huge outrage in India on the picture
Despite the tweet being deleted by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, its screenshot went viral in India, drawing widespread criticism on social media. A user tweeted, “Surprise! The official handle of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine depicts Maa Kali in a derogatory posture. This is not a work of art. Our faith is not a matter of joke. Remove it and apologize.”
Another Twitter user said, “It is not okay to hurt the sentiments of 1.4 billion Indians. This is a blatant display of Hinduphobia by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Please remove it.” Some Indian Twitter users also demanded the intervention of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. One user tweeted, “Indian Ministry of External Affairs and S.K. Jaishankar please take note.”
