Symptoms of diabetes: By the year 2018, poor diet has emerged as a major reason behind more than one crore 41 lakh cases of diabetes type 2 worldwide. Globally, more than 70 percent of these figures are related to new cases. It is a matter of relief that India had the least number of diabetes related to unhealthy eating habits.
What does research say?
The researchers said the study found that countries with more than 30 percent of their population having unhealthy diets, such as India, Nigeria and Ethiopia, had the lowest incidence of type 2 diabetes. The analysis, published in the journal ‘Nature Medicine’, looked at data from 1990 and 2018. The important thing in this has come to know that due to which diet the figures of diabetes are increasing in the world. Eleven types of diets were considered in the research. Three of them were found to have a major role in increasing diabetes.
These foods included a lack of whole grains, an excess of polished rice, wheat, and a high intake of processed meats. Drinking too much fruit juice and eating non-starchy vegetables, not eating dry fruits have also caused people to suffer from diabetes.
Senior author Dariush Mozaffarian from Tufts University in the US said that our study shows that poor quality carbohydrates are the biggest factor in diabetes worldwide.
How does diabetes affect?
In type 2 diabetes, the body’s cells become resistant to insulin. Insulin is a hormone made in the pancreas, which controls the lack of glucose in the bloodstream at any point of time. The study of 184 countries showed that all countries saw an increase in type 2 diabetes cases between 1990 and 2018.
The researchers reported that diets in Central, Eastern Europe and Central Asia – particularly Poland and Russia – are rich in red meat, processed meat and potatoes. There were the largest number of cases of type 2 diabetes linked to diet. Latin America and the Caribbean region also had a significant number of type 2 diabetes cases. Sugar-sweetened beverages, high consumption of processed meats and low intake of whole grains, particularly in Colombia and Mexico, have been attributed.
