416 people were arrested in Assam within 24 hours, you will be shocked to know the reason


Himanta Biswa Sarma: Assam government has intensified action against child marriage. Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said on Sunday (22 December 2024) that 416 people have been arrested in the third phase of action against child marriage in the state. This action was started on the night of 21-22 December. According to the report of news agency PTI, the police have registered 335 cases in this regard and the arrested people will be presented in the court on Sunday.

Assam government strict against child marriage

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma gave this information by posting on Instagram. He said that we will continue to take bold steps to end this social evil. The state government had launched the campaign against child marriage in two phases in February and October in 2023. In the first phase in February, 4,515 cases were registered and 3,483 people were arrested, while in the second phase in October, 710 cases were registered and 915 people were arrested.

There are many cases of child marriage in Assam – report

A report released on World International Justice Day on July 17 said that the Assam government’s emphasis on legal intervention in child marriage cases has now become a role model for the rest of the country. It was said in the report that this legal strategy of the Assam government has reduced child marriage by 81 percent in 20 districts of the state between the years 2021-22 and 2023-24.

Earlier this year, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government took a major decision and repealed the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935. When the uproar on this issue started within the Assam Assembly and the opposition parties asked why it was needed, then CM Himanta had angrily said that he will continue to ban child marriage. He had said, “As long as I am alive, I will not allow child marriage to happen in Assam.”
