The police have so far arrested nine people, including four from the Orewa group, in connection with the incident that took place on October 30. The Areva Group was managing the British-era suspension bridge.

The prosecution presented the primary FSL report as evidence in the court of Chief District and Sessions Judge PC Joshi, who was hearing the bail plea of ​​the accused on Monday. District Public Prosecutor Vijay Jani said, “The report revealed that the cables on which the entire bridge was suspended were rusted. The anchor pins connecting the cables to the ground were broken while the bolts on the anchors were three inches loose.” The court can issue an order on the bail application on Wednesday.

Vijay Jani said, “The group had sold 3,165 tickets on October 30 and there was no coordination between the ticket booking offices on either side of the bridge.” He said that the booking clerk who was arrested should have stopped selling tickets, but he continued to sell tickets and let more people onto the bridge.

Those arrested include Deepak Parekh and Dinesh Dave, managers of the Oreva Group, and repair contractor Prakash Parmar, owner of Dev Prakash Solutions, Devang Parmar, who was hired by Oreva to repair the bridge. The bridge was opened after four days of repair. During the hearing, Deepak Parekh attached a purchase order issued by Oreva Group to Dev Prakash Solutions, which stated that the renovation would be done after breaking the floor of the bridge.

The contractor was not qualified to carry out the renovation work

Advocate Vijay Jani said, “Dev Prakash Solutions has accepted that it only changed the floor. According to the FSL report, the new metal floor increased the weight of the bridge. Moreover, both the repair contractors Wasn’t fit to work.” According to the FIR, at least 250 to 300 people were present when the bridge collapsed after a cable broke. The report also revealed that the Oreva Group had not hired any expert agency to assess the load-bearing capacity of the bridge before opening it for the public.

The report says the guards were never told about safety protocols or how many people should be allowed on the bridge. Public prosecutor Vijay Jani said that Oreva was responsible for security, but they did not even keep any lifeguards or boats to rescue people in case of an accident.

The bridge had collapsed only four days after it was reopened. As per the contract, it was supposed to be closed for eight to 12 months, but it was reopened after seven months without any fitness certificate from the local civic body.
