Kerala: A teenager died in Kerala’s Alappuzha district of a rare brain infection caused by a type of amoeba found in contaminated water. State Health Minister Veena George gave this information on Friday (July 7).
A 15-year-old boy living in Panavalli in Alappuzha district of Kerala was infected with ‘Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis’ (PAM). Confirming the death of the teenager, Minister Veena George said that earlier five cases of this rare disease had been reported in the state.
What are the symptoms of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis?
George told the media in Thiruvananthapuram that the first case came to light in 2016. After this, its cases were found again in 2019, 2020 and 2022. Fever, headache, vomiting and seizures are the main symptoms of this disease. George said that all the infected patients died.
What did the doctors say?
Doctors said that when free-living, non-parasitic amoeba bacteria enter the body through the nose, the human brain gets infected. This is a serious disease. In view of this, the district health officials have advised people to avoid bathing in contaminated water.
